**Famous People - Mini-Curriculum Units**: Created by Students in ELED 405, Teaching Social Studies, Department of Elementary Education, Utah State University. Winter, 1997. Each student was assigned a famous woman, African American, or African to research. After researching these famous individuals, the pre-service teachers developed short mini-units to teach about these people. The following big understandings were adopted to span the variety of mini-units that were developed:
Individuals do and should make a difference
Role models help us to reflect on the qualities and actions we want to exhibit.
People's actions are influenced by time and place.
Individuals are influenced by the groups and institutions around them.
Our perceptions of people vary with time, information, and world view.
